Speak Life: Using Words to Set A Positive Tone
If there’s one thing single moms have in spades, it’s resilience. You’re juggling schedules, homework, grocery runs, and maybe the occasional Lego landmine underfoot.
But have you ever stopped to consider how your words—even the ones you say to yourself—shape your day?
Words are like seeds. What you plant today grows tomorrow. If you’re constantly telling yourself, “I’ll never get this right,” or “I’m failing as a mom,” you’re planting seeds of doubt and discouragement.
What if you plant seeds of hope, strength, and faith instead?
Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” That’s a fancy way of saying: Your words matter. They set the tone for your thoughts, actions, and even the atmosphere in your home. You can “speak life” into otherwise lifeless situations.
What Does It Mean To Speak Life?
Speaking life means using your words to build people up, not tear them down. It’s about spreading hope, encouragement, and kindness—like sprinkling verbal glitter everywhere you go, but without leaving a mess.
We get it—life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, but speaking life means choosing to shine a little light even when things are a little cloudy. Your words have the power to heal, inspire, and breathe fresh air into someone’s weary soul, including your own.
5 Ways To Speak Life
1. The Mirror Pep Talk
You’ve probably told your kids, “You’ve got this!” or “I’m so proud of you!” But when was the last time you said that to yourself? (Cue the awkward pause.)
Start each morning with what we like to call some “mirror pep talk.” Look yourself in the eye and say:
“I am doing my best, and that’s enough.”
“God’s got my back, even when I feel like I’m running on empty.”
“I’m raising world-changers, one snack at a time.”
It might feel silly at first, but your brain doesn’t know the difference between you being awkward and you being awesome. It just hears the words and runs with them.
2. Flip the Script
Because sometimes life feels more like spilled juice and overdue bills than butterflies and bubble gum, you need to flip the script. You can reframe negative thoughts with a little intentional wordplay.
Instead of: “I’m so overwhelmed.”
Try: “I’ve got a lot going on, but I’ll tackle it one step at a time.”
Instead of: “I’m not a good mom.”
Try: “I’m a learning mom, and God’s grace fills the gaps.”
Flipping the script doesn’t mean ignoring reality. It means choosing hope over despair and progress over perfection.
3. Speak Life Over Your Kids
Your words are the soundtrack of your kids’ lives. They’ll remember your encouragement long after they forget your “no more screen time” speeches.
Try saying things like this.
When they’re struggling: “I see you’re trying hard, and that’s what matters.”
When they’re feeling down: “God made you special, and I’m so glad He put you in my life.”
When they succeed (even in the little things): “I knew you could do it! You’re amazing.”
4. Anchor Your Words in Truth
Sometimes, the best words aren’t our own. God’s Word is packed with promises that can lift your spirit and renew your perspective. Here are a few to keep handy:
When you’re tired: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
When you’re worried: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
When you need strength: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Post these verses on your fridge, bathroom mirror, or wherever you need extra encouragement. When you read a scripture that speaks to you, write it down and keep it close to you. Memorizing God’s word helps us speak His life into our lives and the lives of others.
5. Laugh Often
Okay, this one technically isn’t using words, but let's be real, sometimes you just have to laugh to keep from crying. Whether it’s a toddler meltdown or an epic laundry fail, it’s good to find the humor in the chaos.
Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” So, use your laughter as a secret weapon to strike down negative feelings of discouragement, hopelessness, or frustration. It’s amazing what laughter can do for your soul.
Some Parting Words
Make it your mission to speak life — over yourself, your kids, and your circumstances. Remember, you don’t have to get it perfect. Just keep showing up, keep speaking positive words, and keep trusting that God is working through you, even on the messy days.
You’ve got this, momma. And God’s got you.
