I’ve Stopped Dreaming About My Future

I’VE STOPPED DREAMING ABOUT MY FUTURE

Life is challenging for everyone, but as a single mom, you shoulder more responsibilities than many other people. When you’re living in “survival mode”, it can take everything within you to put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.

Wake up, take a shower, get yourself ready, make breakfast, get your kids ready for school, go to work, meet everyone’s demands, pick up your kids, take them to sports practice, throw together something for dinner, help with homework, wash the dishes, help with an “I forgot it was due tomorrow” school project, get everyone ready for bed, pack lunches for tomorrow, pay the bills, tidy up the house, fall into bed. (Repeat)

Maybe you’ve had moments where you thought to yourself, “how did I end up here?”

With a packed schedule and little time for yourself, it’s easy to lose your identity. As women, we’re used to sacrificing for others, “powering through”, and “making it work”. But when repeatedly giving up your own hopes and dreams turns into your everyday lifestyle, it can cause you to lose touch with who you are at your core and what you want for your life.

Set Goals for Your Dreams

Mama, you’ve worked too hard to sacrifice your entire future. You’ve lived through some difficult seasons, but as long as you’re breathing there is still life ahead that’s worth living in a way that feels authentic to you.

You can learn to start dreaming again and to trust yourself to achieve what you want in life, for yourself and for your family.

In our free online Essential Life Skills course through Shepherd’s Village University, we teach you a goal-setting technique and a process to empower you to make changes.

We’ll specifically dig into:

  • What’s important to you

  • Areas where you want to grow

  • How to start making changes when the process feels overwhelming

  • How to set S.M.A.R.T. goals

  • How to develop a vision for your future

We know that change feels overwhelming, especially when you’ve lived life in survival mode for a long time. It’s totally okay (and even advisable) to start with something small. Start by setting a goal so small it would be impossible not to achieve it, and from there you’ll build confidence to take on even bigger challenges.

Is the fear of failure holding you back from change?

As cliché as it sounds, you really only fail if you stop trying. If you don’t end up where you thought, re-evaluate and redirect.

In our course, we teach you to set goals based on your values, so you’ll always learn something in the process because you pursued something important.

Be Honest with Yourself

One more thing to keep in mind: this process won’t work if you aren’t honest with yourself. You can set goals and make changes all you want, but if they’re based on someone else’s priorities, you may not feel happy with where the results take you.

Give yourself permission to be your authentic, wonderful self.

As Brené Brown says in her book The Gifts of Imperfection, “Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are”.

So, what goals can you set that are bold and that gives you a vision for your family’s future? Be honest, embrace who you truly are, and set those goals.

You’ve got this, Mama!
